OBEDIENCE TO PARENT

(From the Novel: The Namesake and Brick Lane)
Many themes we can find in The Namesake and Brick Lane. One theme I interested in is that the main characters in both stories obey the parent. The reason why I decided to discuss this theme is that people have many ways to show their respect to parents. Regardless, whether the way's considered true or false according to people's judgment.
We have to know the definition of the key term itself before going to the next discussion. The following definitions are taken from (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/). Obedience is the quality or condition of being obedient. It is said the quality because obedience shows how deep one’s care and respect to the parent. The deeper one’s care and respect, the higher quality of someone. The definition of parent is one who begets, gives birth to, or nurtures and raises a child; a father or mother. Or we can say that parent is a guardian; a protector. It is defined a guardian and a protector because the main duty of parent is that looking after of their children and giving them a good education.
Reminding you about the story of The Namesake and Brick Lane, paraphrase of main idea here is really helpful. Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake tells us about the obedience of Ashima, Gogol, and Sonia to their parents. Ashima did not against her parent’s decision to arrange her marriage with Ashoke Ganguli. It shows her obedience and belief to her parent who has chosen her a good husband. Gogol and Sonia also obey their parent (Ashoke and Ashima) in many conditions. When Ashima phoned Gogol to back home for a while (Gogol is a hard-worker), he did not refuse it because of his obedience. Sonia shows her obedience by doing weekly shopping and accompanying Ashima in the home. The second story, Monica Ali’s Brick Lane also told us about the obedience of Nazneen to her parent. She obey her Amma/mother when Amma said that they had better not to against their own fate from God, otherwise, they can get punishment or it can be fatal to their life. It is really different to her sister, Hasina, who disobey her parent and decided to elope with her boyfriend. Nazneen did her Abba/father’s said to get married with the choice man, Chanu, a 40-year-old man. She accepted it directly without any consideration about her young age (Nazneen was 18 years old at that time).
Many people pay attention to this theme (obedience to parent), too. That is why, literary quote have to be given in this paper to emphasize that the theme is also important. The first quote is from Marianne Brace who talks about obedience in The Namesake, “It’s not until he is an adult and married himself that a mortified Gogol recognizes the courage and obedience his parents needed to agree to an arranged marriage and a new life 8.000 miles from home.”
Next, the quote about the same theme in Brick Lane is from Fay Sheco, “…the marriage is mentioned that Nazneen accepts her father’s choice with expected obedience.”
In order to make you understand about the analysis theme discussed here, I give the examples from the novel. We see Sonia and Gogol’s obedience to Ashima after Ashoke’s death. “Sonia drives into town and does the weekly grocery shopping. Gogol pays the bills, shovels the driveway when it snows.” (Page 183)
We can also see the obedience of Nazneen when her Abba wants to arrange her marriage with Chanu. “…Nazneen shook her head and replied, ‘Abba, it is good that you have chosen my husband. I hope I can be a good wife, like Amma.’” (Page 5)
In conclusion, all main characters in both stories show their respect and care to the parents because of their obedience.
